DESCRIPTION:

FX-501M Elastomeric Coating is a waterbased 100% acrylic, single component, rust preventative, high performance elastomeric corrosion-protective coating. The acrylic backbone has built in flexibility that does not leach out. It provides flexibility even in low temperatures, is UV stable, resists dirt pick up, and is suitable for use on steel or concrete. The excellent elongation properties allow crack bridging without rupturing and wrinkling. FX-501M works well on minimally prepared sound rusted or clean steel in mild to moderate environments. FX-501M is self priming in most applications. Two coats are required. FX-501M is lead and chromate free. FX-501M can be custom colored to a wide variety of earth tone shades.

SURFACE PREPARATION:

All surfaces must be clean, dry and free of all oils, greases, loose rust, poorly adhered coating and other contaminants.

Bare Metal Surfaces: Clean all areas of highly visible rust in accordance with SSPC-SP2 Hand Tool Clean or SSPC-SP3 Power Tool Clean or high pressure water wash with a minimum 4000 psi to 4500 psi pressure washer, with a zero degree spinner or rotating tip at a standoff distance of 4 to 8 inches, to obtain a sound rusted surface.

Previously Coated Metal Surfaces: Clean all areas to be overcoated with a minimum 4000 psi to 4500 psi pressure washer with a zero degree spinner or rotating tip at a standoff distance of 4 to 8 inches to remove poorly adhered or loose coatings. Sound, smooth coatings must be abraded to provide adhesion profile.

APPLICATION PARAMETERS:

Air and surface temperature must be a minimum of 40°F and rising or maximum of 100°F and falling. Surface must be at least 5°F above dew point. Relative humidity should not be above 80%. Recoat time may be extended when relative humidity is above 70%. Minimum of two coats are required with total minimum DFT of 14 mils.

APPLICATION METHODS:

Brush: A wide soft nylon or bristle brush gives best results.

Roller: Use a heavy nap 3/4" synthetic cover.

Spray: Airless spray can be used with care on smooth substrates only; always finish off in one direction. Most types are suitable operating at 3,000 psi with 0.017"-0.023" tips.

COVERAGE:

Coverage on various substrates will vary according to their porosity and hardness. FX-501M should be applied at approximately 120 square feet per gallon per coat. Two coats are required.

PACKAGING:

FX-501M is packaged in 1 gallon, 5 gallon and 55 gallon drums.

SHELF LIFE:

Four year maximum in unopened container when stored in cool, dry area. Opened containers may skin - keep out of direct sunlight when in use and stir occasionally. When pail has been opened and all the material has not been used, make sure lid is tightly secured before storing. If air gets into material, it will thicken.

LIMITATIONS:

FX-501M Elastomeric Coating should not be applied at temperatures below 40°F. FX-501M should not be applied in rain or rain threatening weather. FX-501M should not be used for exposure to most hydrocarbon solvents. PROTECT FROM FREEZING!

CAUTION:

Avoid breathing vapors. When spraying use appropriate respirators for airborne water based paint particles. Consult Material Safety Data Sheet for further information.
