FX-460 Breathable Masonry Coating

DESCRIPTION:

FX-460 Masonry Coating Systemis a protective coating system that provides excellent protection to concrete and mineral substrates against attack from water, UV, chemical and microbial attack.

FX-460 prevents damage from wetting/drying freeze/thaw cycles, and de-icing salts.

The coating system consists of FX-460 Primer and FX-460 Top Coat. The FX-460 System penetrates, seals and repels liquid water, but passes water vapor - "The System that Breathes". FX-460 System provides a hydrophobic "water-shedding" effect to masonry surfaces. FX-460 is manufactured from the most durable exterior grade silicone. The FX-460 Top Coat is available in white, gray, and other colors as special order.

ADVANTAGES:

Excellent water repellency reduces efflorescence, frost damage and fungus growth.
Has built in penetrating waterproofing properties for masonry.
Cured, it provides a hydrophobic effect to protect from corrosion, when used on steel reinforced concrete.
Sunlight stable with good color retention.
Not a vapor barrier—permits water vapor to pass and concrete to breathe. This reduces cracking, spalling, and coating from bubbling. New concrete will continue to cure even after the FX-460 System is applied.
Facilitates removal of dirt and graffiti, resistant to solvent based cleaners.
VOC compliant to all current regulations.
Water based—easy soap and water cleanup.

WHERE TO USE:

FX-460 can be used to coat all concrete and masonry surfaces, bridge abutments, pilings, parapet walls, masonry work, and masonry mortar.

SURFACE PREPARATION:

Bare Concrete - Surfaces must be clean and sound. While some moisture present in the concrete or masonry will not affect the performance of FX-460, the drier the surface, the deeper the penetration.

Previously Coated Surfaces - Remove all oil, grease, loose paint, mill scale, dirt, foreign matter, rust, mold, mildew, efflorescence and sealers to assure sound bonding to the tightly adhered coatings. Glossy surfaces must be mechanically abraded prior to over coating. Sweep blasting or washing with an abrasive cleanser will accomplish this in one operation. Another alternative is to wash thoroughly and mechanically abrade by sanding. Spot prime any bare concrete areas with FX-460 Primer. Check for compatibility by applying a test patch of the recommended coating system, as noted below, covering at least 2 - 3 square feet. Allow to dry one week before testing adhesion per ASTM D7234 - 05 Standard Test Method for Pull-Off Adhesion Strength of Coatings on Concrete Using Portable Pull-Off Adhesion Testers. If the coating system is incompatible, complete removal is required.

APPLICATION:

Bare Concrete - Apply FX-460 Primer at the appropriate rate. FX-460 Primer and FX-460 Top Coat may be applied by brush, roller or spray. Stir FX-460 Top Coat well before use. Apply FX-460 Top Coat after FX-460 Primer has dried for 30 minutes.

Previously Coated Surfaces - Spot prime any areas left bare from surface prep with FX-460 Primer. Apply two coats of FX-460 Top Coat following instructions above. Allow a minimum of 2 hours and maximum of 14 days for recoating with self. For best results on most masonry surfaces, two (2) top coats are recommended.

COVERAGE:

FX-460 Primer is applied at 125 square feet per gallon to meet NY DOT specifications. Other applications allow for a spread rate of 250-350 square feet per gallon, depending upon concrete or masonry porosity. FX-460 Top Coat is applied at approximately 200 to 300 square feet/gallon, depending upon concrete or masonry porosity.

LIMITATIONS:

Do not apply on or through standing water. Material is not intended to seal moving cracks from moisture intrusion. Do not apply FX-460 Primer or FX-460 Top Coat at surface temperatures below 45°F, or when surface temperature is expected to fall below 45°F within four (4) hours of application.

PACKAGING:

FX-460 Top Coat is available in one (1) gallon and five (5) gallon pails. FX-460 Primer is available in 1/2 gallon cans, 1 gallon cans and five gallon pails.

CAUTION:

Contains organic hydrocarbons. Avoid inhalation of vapor. In case of eye contact, immediately flush eyes with plenty of water for at least fifteen (15) minutes. Call a physician in case of severe skin or eye irritation. Wash with soap and water.
