DESCRIPTION:
FX-408 Epoxy Organic Zinc Rich Primer is a two component epoxy primer which provides both barrier and sacrificial protection against steel corrosion. FX-408 promotes adhesion, dries rapidly, and can be either shop or field applied. Meets SSPC Paint Specification No. 20, Type II.
ADVANTAGES:
- Has excellent corrosion resistance; affords galvanic protection to adjacent undercoated areas
- Can be shop- or field-applied primer for steel
- Can be welded in thin (1/2 to 1 mil) films
- Provides superior abrasion resistance
- Salt resistant
- May be used as a weldable, pre-construction primer

SURFACE PREPARATION:
Steel Surfaces: Prior to abrasive blasting insure all surfaces are clean, dry and contaminant free. Steel surfaces shall be abrasive blasted to a minimum SSPC SP-6 Commercial Blast. Surface profile should be 1.0 to 2.5 mils. All blasted steel shall be coated the same day with FX-408 Zinc Rich Primer.
MIXING:
Power mix Component "A" thoroughly before
combining with Component "B". Combine 5 parts by
volume Component "A" to 1 part by volume
Component "B". Mix for not less than three (3)
minutes, using slow speed drill (300 to 600 rpm) and
FX-Mixing Paddle.
Please note FX-408 will not cure without the use of Component "B". When mixing is completed cover and protect material and allow to induct for a minimum of 45 minutes prior to application. Re-agitate material prior to application.
APPLICATION:
FX-408 Epoxy may be applied by brush,
conventional spray or airless spray. Stir intermittently
during application to prevent zinc settlement. All
spray equipment must employ traps to prevent water
and oil from contaminating coating.
The following spay equipment has been found suitable; Graco, DeVilbiss, and Binks. Keep material under mild agitation during application. If spraying is delayed, re-circulate the remaining material in spray line. If spraying or work is stopped do not leave material in spray lines longer than 10 minutes.
Conventional Spray:
Agitated pressure pot equipped with dual regulators,
3/8” I. D. minimum material hose, with a maximum
length of 75", 0.070 fluid tip and appropriate air cap.
Airless Spray:
| Pump ratio | 30:1 |
| Gallons per minute output | 3.0 min |
| Material hose | 3/8" I.D. min |
| Tip size | 0.019 to 0.025 |
| Output psi | 2100 to 2500 |
| Filter size | 60 mesh |
| Teflon packings are recommended |
Brush:
For touch up of areas less than 2 sq ft only
use medium bristle brush and avoid over brushing.
Roller:
Not recommended
Dry Film Thickness:
Recommended dry film thickness is 2.0 to 4.0 mils
DFT. Applications in excess of 5.0 mils DFT per coat
are not recommended.
When used as a weldable, pre-construction primer the recommended DFT is 0.5 mils to 1.5 mils DFT over the abrasive blasted profile. Please contact a Fox Industries Technical Representative for thinning instruction if used as a weldable primer.
APPLICATION CONDITIONS:
Minimum ambient temperature shall not be below
40°F. Maximum temperature shall not exceed
100°F.
Minumum substrate temperature shall not be below
35°F. Maximum substrate temperature shall not
exceed 120°F.

CLEAN UP:
Use xylene or FX-Epoxy Cleaner. In case of spills, absorb and dispose of in accordance with applicable guidelines.
SHELF LIFE:
2 years
STORAGE:
Store materials in a protected indoor area. Storage temperature shall be between 50°F to 85°F.
PACKAGING:
One (1) gallon kit - 1 gallon Component "A" and 1 quart Component "B".
CAUTION:
DANGER! FLAMMABLE! Contains xylene. Keep away from heat, sparks, and flame. Avoid breathing vapor. Use with forced air ventilation in confined areas. Avoid contact of resin or hardener with skin or eyes. In case of eye contact, flush immediately with plenty of water and consult a physician. Do not take internally.
