FX-338 Acrylic Latex Bonding Agent and Additive
MSDS Download
DESCRIPTION:
FX-338 Acrylic Latex Bonding Agent and Additive is a white liquid polymer additive of low viscosity. It is specifically formulated for the use in structural concrete overlays, bridge decks and pavements where improved physical properties and improved bond are needed. FX-338 also improves performance of sand-cement mortars for toppings and tile setting beds.
RECOMMENDED USES:
Bonding agent or admixture for grouts, patches, mortars and masonry coatings. Can be used inside or outside.
ADVANTAGES:
FX-338 imparts increased tensile, flexural and bond strengths to portland cement concrete and mortar. Bond to concrete, steel, or wood is more than double that of normal concrete without FX-338. It is resistant to de-icing chemical salts and salt mist, particularly in ocean front buildings, tropical and semi-tropical climates. FX-338 produces a three-fold reduction in chlorides penetration when compared to plain concrete or mortar mixes. Impact and abrasion resistance are dramatically increased. During placement, FX-338 allows considerably more finishing time than other available polymers of a similar chemical base. Moisture retention during cure is excellent, wet curing is not necessary. To prevent moisture loss, cover with polyethylene sheet. FX-338 develops high bond shear strength for placing mixes on top of existing concrete. Non-reemulsifiable.

APPLICATION:
FX-338 for concrete is added to concrete or mortar mixes at a rate of 3.5 gallons per 94 lb. bag of cement. Additional water may be added at time of mixing to achieve a 0.35 water/cement ratio, or a suitable consistency for ease of placing, depending upon type of application. Concrete surfaces must be clean and sound and must be pre-soaked to compensate for substrate absorption. Concrete or mortar containing FX-338 may be placed by conventional screeds and equipment. Finishing operations should be completed as soon as conditions permit.
Bonding Coat:
Apply bonding coat (straight or bonding grout mix) with a brush or broom. The concrete must be placed before the bonding agent or bonding grout dries.
Bonding Grout Mix:
- 2 Gallons Water (7.6L)
- 2 Gallons FX-338 (7.6L)
- 1-94 lb. bag cement (42.6 kg)
Mix water and FX-338 together; add cement to wet mix, mixing well into desired consistency.
Straight Bonding Agent - 200 to 300 sq. ft/gal.(4.9-7.4 m2/L)
Bonding Grout Mix: Yield
- 2 - Gals. water 1.3 cu. ft. or
- 2 - Gals. FX-338 125 sq. ft. at 1/8"
- 1 - 94 lb. bag Portland Cement
- 2 - 50 lb. bag Sand
Mix for Thin Toppings, Patches, Overlays And Underlayments: Yield
- 2 - Gals. water 2.8 cu. ft. or
- 2 - Gals. FX-338
- 270 sq. ft. at 1/8" or
- 1 - 94 lb. bag Portland Cement 67 sq. ft. at 1/2"
- 300 lb. sand.
Thin Toppings, Patches, Overlays and Underlayments (less than 3/4" thick):
- Use straight FX-338.
Thick Toppings, Patches, Overlays and Underlayments (over 3/4" thick):
- Apply 1/8" of bonding grout mix prior to placement.
Cold Joints or Interrupted Pours:
- Apply straight FX-338 or 1/8" Bonding Grout mix.
Admixture:
Mix for Thin Toppings, Patches, Overlays and Underlayment (less than 3/4" thick):
- 2 Gallons Water (7.6L)
- 2 Gallons FX-338 (7.6L)
- 1 - 94 lb. bag Cement (42.6 kg)
- 250 lb. Sand (113.6 kg)
Mix water and FX-338 together and sand and cement together.
CURING:
Do not wet cure. Concrete or mortar containing FX-338 is self-curing due to the water retention and film forming properties of the FX-338. Thin sections place under conditions of high temperatures, low humidity and wind exposure should be protected by covering with white pigmented polyethylene.
PACKAGING:
FX-338 is available in 1 gallon, 5-gallon, and 55-gallon drums or bulk.
CAUTION:
FX-338 is waterbased and safe to use. Care should be taken to avoid contact with skin. Wash skin with soap and water. In case of contact with eyes, flush with water for at least 15 minutes, if irritation persists seek medical attention.
